County Commissioners Interview Candidates for County Attorney

The Jackson County Board of County Commissioners held a special meeting Tuesday, Jan. 6, to conduct interviews for the county attorney position.

The meeting began at 1 p.m. CST in the Ernie Padgett Board Room at the Jackson County Administration Building on Madison Street. According to the posted meeting notice, the purpose of the special session was to interview applicants for county attorney, with the possibility that other matters could be addressed as necessary.

Six candidates and law firms were interviewed during the meeting.

Among those interviewed was Nathan G. Nolin, a Graceville native, current Graceville resident, and local business owner. Nolin operates a private law practice and has professional and personal ties to the local community.

Casey Bigelow was also interviewed. Bigelow has experience practicing criminal law and courtroom proceedings within Florida’s legal system.

The Hartman Law Firm, P.A., a Tallahassee-based firm, was another candidate interviewed by the commission. The firm has practiced law in Florida for decades and handles matters including administrative, governmental, and business-related legal issues.

Blankenship & Jordan, a Chipley-based law firm, was also interviewed. The firm previously served as Jackson County’s county attorney through Michelle Jordan, whose duties with the county ended at the close of last year.

Knowles & Randolph was also among the firms interviewed. The firm handles civil, commercial, and municipal-related legal matters, including work involving local governments.

Marcus Green, a Florida-licensed attorney, rounded out the list of candidates. Green has represented clients in Northwest Florida in matters involving property rights, eminent domain, and business law.

The county attorney serves as legal counsel to the Board of County Commissioners and county staff, advising on legal matters, representing the county in legal proceedings, and ensuring compliance with state and federal law.

The meeting was open to the public in accordance with Florida’s Sunshine Law. Commissioners are expected to take further action regarding the county attorney position at a future meeting.
