Friends of the Graceville Branch Library hosted their Annual Meeting on Thursday, November 9 at the First Baptist Church in Graceville. The event included an array of refreshments and warm bowls of stew as well as a wonderful presentation by Chipley author Linda Gainey Smock.
Author of “Homespun Devotions” and “Homespun Prayers”, Smock opened speaking about her love for idioms and growing up in the Panhandle of Florida specifically just south of Graceville in Chipley. Introduced as a “Florida farm girl”, Smock graduated from Chipley High School before continuing her education at Chipola College and Florida State University as well as the University of South Florida.
Smock spoke about her path to becoming an author of devotionals and how life and God had a way of always bringing a person to where they should be. Smock has published almost half a dozen books with the majority focusing on devotional and her person love, idioms, but she noted that she was venturing into children’s books for some future publications.
Smock went into more detail about her books at the meeting even sharing some excerpts. Her first three books are a series of devotionals using idioms of everyday life to show their spiritual connections and meanings. Venturing into a different area with her sixth book, Smock is publishing it later in December. The book is called, “Just Call Me Honey” and is a children’s story written in first person from a bee's perspective.
The members and public in attendance thoroughly enjoyed the program and Smock with several purchasing books and noting their excitement for the new children’s series.
