Josephine Curry - a life of serving the local communities

ree

Graceville native Josephine Curry has dedicated her life to the local community. From her work days at Jackson County Senior Citizen’s Graceville Center to her evening rooting on any local sports team that’s playing, Curry shows that through love, compassion, and volunteering, everybody can make a difference in at least one person’s life.

Raised in Graceville, Josephine currently lives in Noma where she also supports the growth of the small outlying town. She comes from a blended family and is the youngest of 24 children, eleven of which are still living. She has three children and seven grandchildren, but from many in the community Josephine is “their person”.

Josephine began her career in the workplace cleaning homes for local educators and was also a cashier in Cottonwood. While working she also studied at Chipola College to be an office specialist. Her perfect job didn’t just land in her lap but instead came through diligently applying and pushing forward. When Josephine decided to seek out different employment opportunities, she filled out 26 application at various places before getting hired on at the Jackson County Senior Citizen Center.

From 1993 to present day, Josephine is still working hard for area senior citizens at the Graceville branch. She commented that she enjoys working with the seniors and most of the local citizens all rave about her!

Where did her hard work ethic and soft heart come from, Josephine credits her raising. She spoke about how her parents taught their children not to let anyone dictate to you what you can or cannot have. Equally they impressed let Jesus be your guide. Instilling also... no matter what it looks like stay faithful to Him. Just because one door closes does not mean you have to settle. When opportunity comes, pray for guidance.

Now decades later, Josephine is giving out her own wise advice with a wonderful life to show for her labor. Her advice to her grandchildren and all young people is to know that "only you keep you from succeeding. Having good academical and work ethics keep you apart from others. When doing something make sure your mindset is right.”

A humble servant of God, Josephine was quick to turn a conversation about her to a conversation about how one can help others and all the amazing services offered through her work at Jackson County Senior Citizen Center. Josephine invites all to come by and see her and the center located just north of Obars Insurance Agency on Cliff Street noting she can advise on senior activities, resources, and volunteer programs as well as give information on how others can make a donation to aid seniors in the area.

Currently the Older American Coordinator for the Jackson County Senior Citizen’s Graceville center, Josephine assists citizens at the center and provides in Home Services when needed. What inspires her the most are the seniors themselves, she commented adding that she loves and cares for them and truly enjoy the love she receives from them. She went on to add that working with the elderly has been a lifelong passion of hers.

Presently Josephine sits on the Town of Noma Council and is a minister at the Mt.Calvary Holiness in Graceville showing not only local youth but especially young ladies in the community, that with a mind set on goals, a heart made for serving, and a faith in God, anything is possible. Josephine ended that reading and studying the word of God is of great importance to her finishing her interview sharing her favorite scripture, Ecclesiastes 3:1-8: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.”
