ree

Graceville School hosted its annual Veterans Day Program on Monday, November 13 in the school’s gymnasium. The program began with a parade of veterans being greeted and escorted to their seats in the school gymnasium by FFA members. Over a dozen servicemen were present for the program.

School principal Carlin Martin opened by welcoming all the veterans and their families to the school as well as reminding all the students of the sacrifice that veterans make to serve and protect the United States. The school’s kindergarten students then led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. That was followed by the singing of the National Anthem by Graceville staff member Anthony Severson.

The program then continued with several performance by various students. The first-grade students at Graceville School were the first to perform with a special American square dance. That was followed by the reading of the poem, "Dear Veteran" by the school’s second grade students. Finishing out the student performances was the third, fourth, and fifth grade students who performed Lee Greenwood's county hit, “God Bless the USA”.

Principal Martin then introduced guest speaker Byron Dickens. Dickens served in the United States Army. A familiar face on Graceville campus, Dickens is known to students as being a author after reading his book on Emancipation Day called “May Day and Me!” to local classes. This was an opportunity for Dickens to speak of his love of country and the military. First, he thanked all those who had served before him and reminded the students that enlisting is a great way to pave a path for a future career not just in the military but in any sector. He finished encouraging students to be the best that they could be and to always remember the price of freedom.

The program continued with Anthony Severson performing "Letters from War" and GS Band Alumnus Josh Yates played "TAPS". Principal Martin closed the program once again thanking the veterans and their families for their sacrifices and service. The honored guest was then served refreshments in the school’s lounge as well as enjoying wonderful fellowship.
