A total of 4,033 Holmes County voters came out to vote for their favorite candidate in a Universal county election on Tuesday, August 20. All county races were determined in the Primary Election with all county candidates running as Republican causing each race to be Universal.
There were several big races in Holmes County that so many were watching including Holmes County Tax Collector. Incumbent Harry Bell along with Taylor Russ ran for the office.Bell came out with the most votes obtaining 60.12% of the vote or 2,401 votes compared to Russ who earned 1,593 votes.

Earning the role of Holmes County School Superintendent is Buddy Brown. Brown won over Ron Dixon receiving just over 53% of the vote, earning 2,122 votes to Dixon’s 1,820 votes.
The Holmes County School Board seats for District 2 and District 4 were also up for election this year. District 2 seat, currently held by Wilburn Baker, was unopposed with Baker retaining his seat for an additional four years. District 4 seat holder, Poplar Springs citizen, Shirley Owens, had one other individual, Derek Worley running for the seat. The non-partisan race ended with Worley taking the win with 50.09% of the vote or 1,960 votes. Owens received 1,953 votes with Worley earning the primary win by seven votes meaning an official recount occurred due to the seven vote difference.

Three County Commissioner seats (District 1, 3, and 5) were up for election this year. The primary gave final results with residents learning who would hold the role of county commissioner for the next four years. The District 1 County Commissioner seat will be held the next four years by Wilmer Stafford. Stafford who ran for the seat against Jeff Good received 51.91% (2,035 votes) of the vote compared to Good who earned 1,885 votes. The County Commission District 3 seat, currently held by Phillip G. Music, will have a new face with two new candidates vying for the spot. Mitch Johnson won the election with 54.14% of the vote or 2,100 votes against Lee Moss who had 1,779 votes. County Commission for District 5, and the final county commissioner seat up for election, will have Clint Erickson seated for the next four years after winning against Jackie Faircloth and J. Wayne Marsh. Erickson won with 54.87% of the vote (2,168 votes) to Faircloth’s 892 votes and Marsh’s 891 votes.
At the state level, winning the State Attorney for the 14 Judicial Circuit in Holmes County is Larry Basford being elected in the primary race against fellow Republican Eric Garmon. Basford won by just over 78% of the Holmes County vote .
