Today’s Life With The Hellfighters

The Power of Words

by Richard Burke,

President, Chipley Hellfighters

What I write about today is something that is very common in today’s culture. Talking! Everywhere you go, maybe not in most elevators, but everywhere else we go, people are usually talking.

Sometimes, we roll our eyes and think it’s funny when we hear someone that seems to talk non-stop. As the person goes on and on, we being to think – “Yakety, Yak, Yak, Yak.”

But… then of course if we’ll take a moment we may notice that people are staring at us and rolling their eyes. Why? Because now a subject came up that we like and it has us talking on and on non-stop. They’re now staring at us and thinking, “Yak, Yak, Yak, Yak, Yak.”

You’re probably asking yourself why is he writing about something as common as talking. Why? Well my reason is, I was listening to a group of people talking at a restaurant recently and their conversation covered many areas of our lives. They talked about deer hunting, national politics, local governments, and restaurants. But then they got on the subject of church, church services, and all that they felt surrounds the church.

They were talking about church, scriptures, and religion and at first it was uplifting, but I could not help but hear some of their words they began to use as different opinions were expressed with a passion. They wanted their opinions to be heard so the talking got louder and began to include mixed curse words.

I was a little baffled to hear someone talk about the Lord and immediately make their point with curse words. You know the words I mean, those that make someone say, “Oops, I’m sorry, it was a slip of the tongue.” But as I listened to what they were saying a couple of scriptures came to my mind. Let me quote one:

Matthew 12:36 “But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgement.”

But what I want to bring out today is the power of words. Words… we can learn very early in life that we can use words to build up or tear down. I guess that why we learned this little short poem, as early as elementary school, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me!”

YES! WORDS, can be powerful. I think we have all seen how words can negatively affect a person, a church, a ministry, a business, a dream, or even a marriage.

But Praise the Lord, we’ve also seen how Words; allows a person to be saved, gives new life to someone without hope, restores relationships, heals wounded Christians, or stabilizes our Christian walk.

The Power of Words! THINK ABOUT THIS…

Genesis 1:3 God spoke and said, “Let there be light, and there was light.”

“God created night and day.”

Genesis 1:6 God spoke and said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the water.”

“God created Heaven and Earth.”

Genesis 1:9 God spoke and said, “Let the water under the heaven be gathered unto one place.”

“He created oceans and land.”

Genesis 1:14 God spoke, “and created the stars and the moon.”

All of creation was spoke into being with God’s Words. Jesus on the Cross said, “It is finished.”

Remember this, our words are our testimony and can be some of the most powerful words we will ever speak. For example, in Acts 2:40, Peter gave his testimony and exhorted with other words and 3000 were added to the church. Peter’s testimony and words were directed by the Holy Spirit. Our testimony is so important and can be just as powerful. Acts 1:8 says, “But ye shall be witnesses unto me in Jerusalem, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the Earth.”

After reading this, say a prayer that we’ll not allow idle words to cheapen or destroy the testimony that God has given us. But, with POWER, let us proclaim our testimonies boldly and talk about what accepting Christ has done in our lives.
