The Graceville Senior Center welcomed Assistant Fire Chief Bob Lemons of the Graceville Fire Department for an informative fire safety talk. The event was well attended, with many local seniors eager to learn and ask questions about how to stay safe in their homes.
Assistant Chief Lemons began the session by highlighting the importance of fire safety, especially for senior citizens, who are at a higher risk during fire emergencies. "Our goal is to ensure that everyone knows how to prevent fires and what to do in case one occurs," he stated.
During the presentation, Lemons covered several essential fire safety tips:
1. Install and Maintain Smoke Alarms:
•"Smoke alarms are your first line of defense," Lemons emphasized. "Install them in
every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of your home. Test them
monthly and change the batteries at least once a year."
2. Create and Practice a Fire Escape Plan:
•Lemons advised all attendees to develop a fire escape plan with at least two exits
from every room. "Practice your escape plan regularly," he urged. "Make sure
everyone in the household knows what to do and where to meet outside."
3. Cooking Safety:
•"Never leave cooking unattended," Lemons warned. "Use a timer as a reminder and
keep flammable objects like towels and potholders away from the stove."
4. Heating Safety:
•The importance of space heater safety was also discussed. "Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn and always turn them off when you
leave the room or go to bed," Lemons instructed.
5. Avoid Clutter:
•"Keeping your home clear of clutter, especially near exits, can make a big
difference," Lemons ex- plained. "It ensures you have a clear path to escape if
needed."
Throughout the session, attendees asked numerous questions, reflecting their keen interest in the topic. Questions ranged from the best types of fire extinguishers to how to safely store flammable materials. Assistant Chief Lemons provided thorough answers, ensuring that everyone left with a better understanding of how to protect themselves and their homes.
The event concluded with Assistant Chief Lemons encouraging everyone to stay vigilant and proactive about fire safety. "By taking these simple steps, you can greatly reduce your risk of fire and ensure your safety," he said.
