Graceville resident shows off record-making chicken egg

Many have heard the saying “That’s quite a pig” from the cherished children’s tale Charlotte’s Web. The news team at The Graceville News felt a bit of nostalgia on Monday, July 24 when they found themselves muttering “That’s quite an egg.” A sight never seen by those in the room, local resident Richard Lane brought in a record-making chicken egg that is the same size as some of the largest eggs in recorded history and most definitely local history.

A native of Graceville, Richard Lane is a fourth-generation farmer that grew up on his family’s farm in Holmes County just past his alma mater, Poplar Springs High School. Commenting he always enjoyed farming he chose to run his own farm later in his life for fifteen years before retiring. Now, Richard Lane has a personal flock of chickens that he tends to in a lovingly mutually beneficial relationship. Rest assured Richard Lane’s chickens are well cared for as they have consistently provided an egg a day over the years. This is, up until the recent heat that has settled in the area this summer season.

While harvesting eggs, Mr. Lane stumbled upon something impressive. One of his Buff Orpington hens had laid the largest egg he had ever seen. Mr. Lane explained that Buff Orpington chickens are a common breed of chicken. One that has been pure-bred for “over a hundred years” that he noted as originating in England, that is known as being one of the “better breeds to have.”

Mr. Lane noted that he has had many larger than usual eggs, as well as double and even triple- yolked eggs over the years, but he had never seen an egg quite as large as this one. Upon researching, Mr. Lane discovered that the egg was in a category with some of the most noteworthy in size chicken eggs weighing between 170 and 180 grams. Curious as to how he com- pared, Richard Lane decided to weigh his own egg. It weighed in at exactly 175 grams! A truly impressive gift from his chickens.
