The sweltering heat this summer season has taken its toll, not only on Florida beaches, but also on quintessential trade industries that require many men and women to perform their jobs in such strenuous working conditions. Many beachgoers and tourists are buzzing about the lack of relief from the heat, as the peaking temperatures have left the ocean feeling more like a hot tub than a swimming pool. But the summertime heat has done more than make our summer beach trips subpar.
The heat has a life-threatening effect on tradesmen across the region, as the blazing sun beats down on those that have no choice but to endure it. How do these vocational tradesmen withstand such oppressive conditions at work? While some are left to grin and bear it, those that work at Rex Lumber in Graceville are met with compassion and consideration during the brutal summer weather.
With heat index values consistently high enough to cause illness, Rex Lumber has taken preventative measures to help their employees beat the heat this summer season. Deanna Halstead and Kim Knight are helping everyone at Rex Lumber stay ahead of the heat by rolling around with a cooler to deliver ice cold water, cooling towels, and electrolyte popsicles to each department. Such a consideration has had a significant impact on the employees and morale at Rex Lumber. Allowing them to stay ahead of the blazing heat and keep a clear mind while performing their daily duties, and the effort has paid off.
During an interview with The Graceville News on Monday, July 31, Deanna Halstead proudly proclaimed that Rex Lumber Sawmill in Graceville had gone “727 days without any loss time injuries.” A significant victory considering the lethargic nature of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
